So… even though I know nothing about this sort of thing, I’m going to try. I figured that the most fun thing for me to try out would be case modding. I like to paint and make things pretty, so this would seem like a logical extension of this desire. So– day one (as I am sure it will be the same for many days to come)– RESEARCH. I’ve found a number of websites which will help me get my bearings in this quickly evoloving world of computers, and they’re willing to start at the very beginning. That’s nice.

Fun stuff– it’s not told in dry, boring monotone… there’s some humor and ease of reading to this site. I wholeheartedly recommend it!

I’m wondering what my first project should be? We’ll be upgrading systems in the next year or so, so I’d like to have ideas for my next case in mind (so I can custom build it myself!) by then.
We do have Hermione that I can play with, right now, she’s Calyn’s system, but with the promise of a netbook, he may be okay with me taking her apart.
There’s also Nightstar, which, while old, may be a good starter. I’d like to start off with some painting first, and then do some lighting. Eventually, I’d like to get good enough to do things like this:

That’s kinda now my life feels right now, folks. I had a goal to exercise daily, which, for a good two weeks, I did pretty well on. It’s been a week. Eating better? Nah. It’s not a choice– if I had unhealthy garbage, I’d probably eat that. I’ve just gotten smart about not going to the store hungry, so I can consciously choose my food, instead of letting my stomach do the choosing.

Where am I on all these other life goals? They’re germinating, but, like always, my action is stunted. I need to work on that, and seriously, work. Once I get going, I’m unstoppable… it’s just that initial push that’s the hardest part.
So anyway, just random thoughts on a random night.

I’m sitting here, at Science Station, as I tend to do on the weekends, and it is really quite boring. I’ve had two people in so far today, and my lunch relief can’t make it to today, so I’ve got an 8 hour shift with no break. Mildly illegal. Also, I will be starving, so I will most likely make a break for the food court as soon as I am done, to at least grab a snack before heading home.
Or, random genius idea, I’ll see if my parents are going to be shopping today. If they are, they can drop off food for me! YAY! This should work out rather well. I don’t like facing an 8 hour shift without even the prospect of food. Ugh.
Also, I don’t understand how people can function in this society with a fundamental lack of education. Or brains. Or the ability of think. It seriously scares me how much other people don’t know, or really, can’t learn.
I was given a public school’s education, and I look at all these other people I have met in my journeys and am amazed at the huge difference in my foundation of knowledge versus theirs. Yes, a part of that difference is simply natural ability. Still, one would think that even if you take two people of varying natural abilities and teach them the same subject matter, that there would be a similar frame of reference from the both of them. They both have the same foundation given to them, at the very basic level.
I suppose that would be why she seems so stupid, though. Some people never progressed past the very foundation that they were given, whereas others built magnificent cathedrals and skyscrapers on that very same foundation.

I know I sound arrogant… but I think I have a right to be in this case.

Here’s the sitch:

A girl, a co-worker of mine here at SS, whom I believe I have blogged about, or at least twittered about, before, called this morning to ask me to do her work. She was planning on asking for my help anyway, but because she did not have gas money, she couldn’t make it in today.
This thing she needed help with… really not all that difficult. She was supposed to find out information about computers, and to come up with ideas on how to teach concepts about computers to children. I decided to do only the research, as I am not being paid enough to write their classes for them. The girl, however, could not adequately explain to me what was supposed to be done. She also could not tell me what programming languages she wanted these kids to learn (she said, and I quote, “the one with ones and zeroes”).

So, I found the very basic of materials and have them organized and pretty, while waiting for the lady who has my old job to review them.  Given what I had to go off of, I think I did a remarkable job. 

On a completely different note, I know that a majority of my group of friends would love to travel or live in Europe someday.  I am included in this group… however, most of the group would love to live in the Netherlands. 

I challenge you to look at Iceland.  Yes, I have only recently been looking at Iceland, but I really am liking what I see.  They speak English (and Icelandic!), have a constitution somewhat like our own, guarantee free speech, have an outstanding record on social rights, are some of the longest lived people in the world, are the most literate people in the world, and also have a really beautiful country.  Sure, it’s small (about as small as Kentucky), and they don’t have that large of a population, but they really are a modern, Western nation (albeit with the socialistic Nordic bent!).

So, take a look at Iceland.  It isn’t as far away as the rest of Europe, but you can still get to mainland Europe without difficulty.  I like Iceland.

I’m not alone. In fact, most of you who read this are probably living lives at equally high speeds. We jet from moment to moment never really taking the time to see things of value. We lose track of what is important. The minutiae becomes all encompassing and we drown in it.

So, we stop. We breathe. We take a moment and pause. The world is not as important as we think. All this crap that seems important, isn’t. I choose to resist. I choose not to be buried. I choose to relax.

There are things to actually worry about, but so many of our concerns are so terribly trivial. So many of my concerns are so terribly trivial. Maybe, just maybe, we should remember that.

This summer marks my last term at Kirkwood. I am all set to go at the University of Iowa this fall. Classes are registered for and I am actually moving into the new apartment next week. Everything seemed so nice and resolved. As everything started to settle down, you just know something had to go wrong.

The situation is a simple one. I have two required classes left and both of those I elected to take online. With the chaos of the summer, I thought it was the smartest move. What I didn’t know was that the classes were moving to a new format this semester and while one of my classes is doing quite well at using the new software the other is, well, seriously problematic. This poor presentation and oddly established requirements make the class quite annoying and may negatively affect my grade. My usual response is to drop the class. After all, this is my education, I deserve to get what I paid for. Unfortunately, the only other available course that meets my requirement (which I need fulfilled before fall) is only open to people in a specific program. That means I get to call and beg a boon from someone I have never met before. It’s not something I am looking forward to, but what can you do? I need this. My only other option is to continue the online class which, quite frankly, is my very last resort (Yes, it is that bad!).
